PRESENTATION

Django a Gogo™ Music Camp is a first-class music program providing musicians of all levels and instruments access to the greatest knowledge and teachers available. The program focuses mainly on the musical style of Django Reinhardt (referred to as "Gypsy Jazz" in the USA). The goal of this camp is for students to learn from all the teachers and performers of the festival in an intimate small group setting, or workshops.

LESS IS MORE!
LESS STUDENTS = MORE QUALITY!

For Django a Gogo 2022 the camp will be limited to 30 students. We want the students to have a close relationship with the teachers (Raphael Fays, Sebastien Felix, Laurent Hestin, Russel Welch, Thor Jensen, Stephane Wrembel band plus the special workshop guests) and receive as much personally relevant information as possible. We want maximum interaction and personal connection between the students and the teachers. We felt 30 students would allow us to maintain a very high level of quality for our camp.

We plan to organize 3 groups of 10. Each group will receive 2 morning classes each day: A 90mn class on rhythm, followed by a 90mn class on improvisation. In the afternoon there will be a 90mn small group workshop with the Stephane Wrembel band and Raphael Fays, and a 90mn concert/workshop/Q and A with the entire lineup!

The philosophy of our camp, and what sets us apart from others is, no student will be denied access to a specific teacher because he or she is not of a certain ability level.

It is preferable when registering for the camp to already have a basic knowledge of chords and some soloing in one style or another. However, the doors are open to all! Everyone will get the musical information they need at their own point of development. The teachers and performers have been selected not only for their ability to offer world-class concerts and instruction, but also for their good spirit and their general kindness, patience, and humor.

In addition to offering students the rare opportunity to become deeply immersed in this style of music with some of the greatest teachers and performers in the world, the Django a Gogo Music Camp will be fun and undoubtedly entertaining.  There will be plenty of coffee, snacks, jams and great times!

THE TOWN

The camp is being hosted by the charming town of Maplewood, New Jersey. Classes and workshops will take place right in the heart of the village! It is easily accessible by highway and public transportation. Maplewood is a 25-minute drive from NYC, a 10-minute drive from Newark Airport, and 30 minutes by train from Penn Station New York. Maplewood is full of restaurants, coffee shops, pubs, and boutiques...all within a block of the venues.

The New York Times recently published an article about Maplewood, "If Brooklyn Were a Suburb". The town is bustling and hip. The food is excellent, and the whole area (Essex County) is one of the most culturally active in the country.

THE VENUE: THE WOODLAND

Maplewood was our first choice for the music camp because of its amenities, accessibility, and artistic vibe. We have been provided with two gorgeous, cozy and extremely functional rooms to host the event. The three groups will be taught at THE WOODLAND, as well as the master classes, and the concerts. The Woodland is a gorgeous building with a nice, old-time concert feel.

THE TEACHERS

At the Django a Gogo festival all of the participating musicians are world-class performers, as well as world-class teachers.

Stephane Wrembel:
While currently based in Maplewood, Stephane is a native of Fontainebleau, France. He spent ten years perfecting his craft in the Gypsy camps of the Fontainebleau area (home of Django Reinhardt). He then moved to Boston and graduated summa cum laude from Berklee College of Music in 2002. Wrembel has composed music for two of Woody Allen’s blockbusters (“Big Brother” for Vicki Cristina Barcelona and “Bistro Fada”, main theme of Midnight in Paris), both films were Academy Award winners. Stephane was a special guest composer and live performer for the 2012 Academy Awards ceremony where Midnight in Paris was celebrated. In addition, Midnight in Paris won a Grammy Award for Best Soundtrack, of which Stephane was the largest contributor. Wrembel has composed for many films, shorts, and commercials. He has recorded seven albums, and tours with his band worldwide, performing two hundred concerts a year.

Raphael Fays:
Raphael Fays is a living legend of the Django style. Not only is he at the very foundation of the rebirth of Django’s guitar sound (his first album was released in 1979 while he was only 19 years old!), but he continues to innovate, compose, record (21 albums so far!), and inspire the ever-growing crowd of Django aficionados. His command of Flamenco guitar rivals his command of Django’s style. This is a very unique phenomenon in the world of guitar. He is one of the greatest virtuosos who ever lived.

Laurent Hestin
“Those who have heard Laurent Hestin perfom on his “6 strings piece of wood” will never forget it. A master guitarist, his field is above all the world of improvisation. But it would be very reducing to limit him to this description, seeing how many people he worked with with his genius rhythms…” - Satellit

Laurent Hestin started guitar at age 7, and became quickly one of the most in demand studio musician in France. He is very famous for his unbelievable control of the instrument and his extreme versatility. On top of it he grew up and lived near Django Reinhardt’s hometown, and is one of the rare musicians to have worked with two legends of the Gypsy Jazz style: Django’s son Babik Reinhardt and master Patrick Saussois. He is mainly touring with musicals all over Europe, but also performs in an incredible variety of bands, in stadiums or local intimate jazz clubs.

Sebastien Felix
Sebastien Felix is known in France as a “Guardian of the Temple” (The temple of Gypy Jazz...). He seems to be spiritually connected to the legendary guitarist and composer Django Reinhardt. Many modern guitarists have included a more modern take in the tradition, but Sebastien remains one of the main representant of the tradition, such as Stochelo Rosenberg or Fapy Lafertin. A gypsy himself, he picked up the guitar at age 13, and has since then toured the festivals and clubs in Europe.

Sebastien is known not only for his virtuosity, but also his ability to transmit values of beauty, kindness and humility. His quintet is highly regarded as one of the best in the world nowadays, and he shares his music which is interpreted in the purest tradition of Gypsy Jazz and the Hot Club of France.

Russell Welch

Russell is a New Orleans' "Best Traditional Jazz Artist" and "Best Traditional Jazz Album" 2019 nominee. He was New Orleans' "Best Guitarist" nominee, 2016. Russell's first, all-original album, "Showarama Hot Trio," was also a New Orleans' "Best Traditional Jazz Album" 2012 nominee. Russell's second album, "Pour Vous" featured original arrangements of traditional New Orleans jazz classics. His third, all-original album, Russell Welch Hot Quartet album "Mississippi Gipsy" (2015) was reviewed as "masterful" and a "tour de force" by Offbeat Magazine.

Russell's fourth album, "Acetate Sessions" is a New Orleans' "Best Traditional Jazz Album" 2019 nominee A mix of originals and classics, It was recorded using acetate masters and vintage recording equipment, to recreate vintage recording sounds, which, according to an Offbeat Magazine review, "crackle with the energy of youth discovering someplace magical...(and) sound as fresh as tomorrow."

Russell is not only the most sought after guitarist in New Orleans, he is also one of the finest Django style player in the world!
